Why you should NOT put your pinkie up during afternoon tea

This is really gross and might scare you into never having your pinkie up again. French edition. 🇫🇷

Here is why you shouldn’t have your pinkie up when having tea. Even as a joke:

The pinkie up we know today was originally a French practice.

In the royal courts of France, people were highly promiscuous, and when they had a sexually transmitted disease, they would be polite as to let others know they were infected by putting their pinkie up.

This is really gross and might scare you into never having your pinkie up again.

This was a courteous sign to all those who were also infected and interested. A person with their pinkie up would look around the room to search for others with their pinkie up, and would. Ahem. Socialize.

I hope you enjoyed this installation of peculiar etiquette facts. If you want more etiquette and social grace, check out my finishing school programmes.

Afternoon tea etiquette is included in Adult and Youth Etiquette, but a separate Afternoon Tea Programme is also available!
