We get it. You’re plugged in. You might even be big on the internet. But when is it actually time to put your device down?
At the party? No. When you’re with a friend one-on-one? No. At an event with tons of family? Never.
It’s important to be mindful and in the moment. You’re getting others used to the idea that they are not the priority when pulling out this chunk of metal that holds your contacts. Turn on do not disturb for that one time you see that person.
If you see them once a week, or if you haven’t seen them in months, remember that humans crave attention and social connection. To take that away from someone, because of your need to spread your awareness to something else is deeply insulting to the effort you both put into making this meeting happen.
Why are you hanging out on social media when you have a real chance to be social right in front of you? Put your phone down now. You have no idea what this person might be going through, and they need your full attention. Give them your heart, and treat them how you would want someone to feel if they were hosting you.
Time is precious, and you are both busy. Take the moment you have now to actively listen and share the same air together.
